The maze has been known for thousands of years in all ancient civilisations: cavemen, Mesopotamians (current Iraqis), Egyptians, Celts, Navajos (American Indians), Australian Aborigines. It can be found on all 5 continents from the most ancient times to today.
The maze has fascinated mankind by its mysteries, for only one way leads to your goal. For Egyptians, the most important was to reach the centre, whereas for the Greeks, it was important to be able to come back.
Tortuous paths were carved in the rock faces of the American desert, on the Scandinavian cliffs, in the peat of Wales and England, but the most famous of them all is that of the Greek legend built by Dedalus to lock in the Minotaur…
There are many symbols and metaphors about mazes, they can represent:
- Complexity (technological and human)
- Apprenticeship
- Discovery of the unknown
- The path of life
